Souvlaki

Y’all. When I tell you I felt like I was living out my best Mama Mia moment. I was LIVING for Souvlaki. As I walked to Souvlaki, it didn’t feel like anything different, but upon entering, I felt like I was transported to Greece. It’s so beautiful inside despite being small, she is so cozy and homey.

I had never been before nor do I really eat Greek food (not because I don’t like it, but because there’s really just not much where I currently live).  However, I am a HUGE fan of it now and have been dreaming of Souvlaki for the last month. I even resorted to making my own recreations. I’ve eaten my recreations more often than I’d like to admit, but if you follow me on Instagram then I’m sure you already know.

Let’s get onto the food though! Would you look at this spread?! I was super surprised at the amount of food you get! They really do not skimp you here and it’s all presented so beautifully on the newspaper parchment paper!

Appetizer

We started the day with an appetizer and we ordered the three spreads with pita! We ordered the melitzanosalata (roasted eggplant), tyrokafteri (spicy feta cheese), and taramosalata (Greek-style caviar). I don’t know what I was expected and I was little intimidated (ngl), but I was blown away. I mean literally flavor explosion. The spreads paired with the soft, fluffy pita was perfection. My favorite was a tie between the tyrokafteri and the taramosalata! The taramosalata had such a unique umami flavor that I loved, but the tyrokafteri was simple, but had great flavor (and that’s coming from a gal who previously did not even like feta!).

Another close up shot of the spreads because I mean look at how creamy they are!

Sides

With the platters, you are able to choose two sides and they have so many options! We ordered: Greek fries, rice pilaf, village salad, and cucumber & tomato salad. The only real difference we noticed between the village and cucumber & tomato salad were that the village had a block of feta and some olives; otherwise, they tasted virtually the same. So, we would’ve gotten something else next time for variety. They were really fresh and tasty though. The veggies were all very fresh and tasted so refreshing and cool (perfect for a hot, DC summer!).

These fries though. They deserved their own spotlight because they were that good. I mean would you just LOOK at them?! *insert drool emoji* These are the Greek fries which are skin-on golden fries topped with crumbled feta cheese and oregano. How these fries remained so crispy the entire meal, I have no idea (magic). Again, as a gal who previously did not like feta, this was so good and paired so well with the fries. I never want fries any other way tbh.

Platters

There are other options on the menu, but I think the platters are great options for those who are sharing particularly because you get so much variety. Merides (platters) come with your choice of protein, two sides, sauce and pita! I mean that is bang for your buck, for sure. Not to mention: platters are served with 2 skewers, 2 patties, or 5 veggie balls. We love options.

Our platters:
-Chicken souvlaki with Greek fries, rice pilaf, and tzatziki
-Kolokythokeftedes (zucchini balls) with village salad, cucumber & tomato salad, and hummus

Protein

The chicken souvlaki or chicken skewers were amazing. They were so moist (yes, sorry, needed to use the word) and juicy. I was not expecting that as usually skewers tend to be on the dryer side. That is 100% not the case here and I highly recommend the chicken skewers. I definitely want to shrimp and lamb next time! They even have mushroom for the vegetarian/vegans.

As a veggie option, we ordered the kolokythokeftedes or zucchini balls. I have never had this or even anything remotely similar. They were not super crispy despite their appearance and the inside of them were very soft. The zucchini is essentially grated and formed into balls. Overall tasty, but paired with the tzatziki? *chefs kiss*

Dessert

Last, but not least. We obviously have to end the meal with dessert! We ordered the baklava because the kadaifi was sold out. Baklava is so pretty, I mean look at the layers! It’s not particularly my favorite dessert because I feel like it gets stuck in the teeth a lot, but it was good and they serve it with honey!

Huge thank you to Souvlaki for having me out in December to check them out. They have 2 locations: Dupont Circle – Washington, DC and Hampden – Baltimore, MD. I am such a huge fan of them now, everything was truly so good and the portions are huge. The service also was on another level; they were so kind and really truly take care of you (I noticed this for all the customers that dined, not just me).  Highly recommend y’all check this spot out!
